The cost of technical support, training and upgrading technology over time. These services are difficult and can be costly for even those with means. The technology for the online participation still has a way to go before it is "plug and play." Because this is considered a critical element in closing the Digital Divide in underserved communities the Board responded to practitioners by adding it to the 5As originally approved. Many believe one reason cell phones, games and big screen TV are so popular is that they are "Plug and Play". Do you have any ideas to more broadly deploy broadband?

Southeast Community Development Corporation

Project:
Southeast Cities Technology Collaborative

Increasing access to broadband and providing training to improve the health and educational outcomes in the Southeast Los Angeles region.

The Collaborative is providing basic Digital Literacy to 3,200 youth and adults, preparing 2,700 adults for the workforce, placing 150 in jobs, and assisting 800 families subscribe to broadband.

Deployed 6 community wireless networks in low-income residential buildings and business corridors in 3 Los Angeles neighborhoods, provided Wi-Fi to 325 residential units, while providing technology-based training to 700 participants.

Designed an innovative program that enables low-performing middle schools effectively integrate  technology into all aspects of their school improvement efforts.  Students receive a netbook for use at home and in the classroom.  Parents and teachers receive training on how to leverage this technology to support student academic achievement.
